The insulation that sits in your attic is absolutely critical to the overall energy efficiency of your home. It helps to keep a consistent moisture level in your home, helps to block out noise, helps to keep that cold A/C air inside during the summer and that warm heat in during the winter. As time passes, your attic insulation can naturally deteriorate. This can consequently lead to a number of issues if your attic insulation isn’t performing to its potential.
Is it time for new attic insulation? Here are signs that it may be time.
1. Pest Infestation:
Worn down or damaged insulation can be the perfect home for pests. If you for any reason suspect that insects, rodents or pests are in your attic, the first step is having a professional take a look. If they confirm that rodents have used old insulation to nest, it’s time to replace.
2. Lack Luster Climate Control:
If you find it extremely difficult to regulate a comfortable temperature it could certainly be because your house isn’t properly insulated. If your insulation is old and damaged, it most likely wont do a proper job of keeping your houses at it’s intended temperature.
3. Ice Dams / Icicles: You may not know this, but Ice Dams and Icicles form at the edge of your roof often because of inadequate insulation in your roof. When insulation in your attic can’t keep the heat inside your home, it leaks out causes snow to melt. This snow melts, drops down to the edge of your roof and re-freezes as icicles.
If you are having any of these problems occur, it might be best to have someone check out and inspect your insulation.
